Advanced Production System for
the Built Environment Focusing on Productivity and Sustainability

PROJECT - STEPS

Focus on
Productivity and
Sustainability.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AT ITS FINEST

STEPS consists on the development of a new advanced building production system that allow to reduce or even eliminate the environmental impact of an entire production chain. It aim at integrating and feeding the construction sector and substantially increasing productivity in the construction industry.

BOUNDLESS AMBITION

This system depends on the research and development of a specific technological solution - houseFIT system –, a technological system of lightweight prefabricated components with a high level of automation, which will allow the complete production of buildings in self-construction or robotized labor.

Coordinating Team

The construction industry is clearly in need of introducing significant changes in the whole production process of buildings (materials, design and on-site assembly) if it is to meet the increase in demand and significantly reduce its intrinsic environmental impacts, while ensuring an increase in comfort and efficiency in buildings. Project STEPS consists in the development of a new advanced building production system that makes it possible to reduce the environmental impact of the construction production chain and to substantially increase the productivity of the industry, bringing it closer to the average of the manufacturing industry.

Nelson Bento Pereira

Project Director

Project STEPS presents a clear commitment to promoting sustainability throughout the entire production process for modular buildings, by investing in the research and development of sustainable insulation materials which can be a viable alternative with a reduced ecological footprint.

Innovative building systems is a subject that has been addressed at FEUP through the prism of Construction Physics. In this sense, the high degree of innovation on Project STEPS is deeply motivating for CONSTRUCT-FEUP researchers.

This intervention was structured in five specific areas of knowledge, namely Building Technology, Thermal, Structural, Acoustic and Fire Behaviour. Each of these areas consists of three distinct stages, the development of the solution, its theoretical validation and finally the experimental validation. The theoretical validation stage is perhaps the most time consuming since it includes an important research component since it involves modelling a new construction system based on theories in the field of building physics whose validity has to be proven.
